Since starting trials with biochar in 2021, winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage has seen its effectiveness first-hand. While drought reduced volumes of the 2023 Roussillon vintage by as much as 70 percent for some winegrowers in the region, Lafage lost only a quarter of his grape crop. And his berries were much larger than the smaller, shriveled grapes of many neighboring vineyards.
