Hulu is serving up 10 spicy new episodes of FX’s Emmy–winning series The Bear this week, and hungry binge-watchers are already salivating over the season 4 sizzle reel (bear with us, please).
For those in need of refreshment, The Bear is the most dramatic chef-driven drama since Servant and the funniest chef-driven comedy since Bob’s Burgers. Just kidding. This Best Comedy–winning show isn’t funny at all! Go figure.
Jeremy Allen White has now won back-to-back Best Actor Emmys for his role as chef Carmy Berzatto. On the show, Carmy is a troubled genius in the kitchen trying to make it in the Chicago fine dining scene. IRL, chef Carmy has already become the most beloved American “TV chef” since Monica Geller. And of course The Bear is already firmly entrenched among our own favorite shows about wine and food.
Fear not, however, you’ll find no spoilers here. You can catch up on the entire series with Wine Spectator’s review of season 3 of The Bear, and check back at the end of this week for all of our hottest takes on season 4. But for now, we’ve got this appetizing new trailer to digest …
”Showtime!” is right! Fans of The Bear will recall that season 3 was long on heavy drama (and really short on wine), so we can’t help but wonder if Carmy’s voiceover in the trailer isn’t maybe also a message to us, the viewers, conceding that people watch TV for many of the same reasons they go to restaurants: “To be taken care of. To relax. To not have to think about anything else for a minute.” Sounds pretty nice, right?
“We could do this,” Carmy seems to be promising us. “We could make it calm. We could make it delicious. We could make people happy.” And we really want to believe him. But then we see Mama Bear (Jamie Lee Curtis) arriving at our comedy’s namesake restaurant, and we know that another tension overdose is on this season’s menu.
But will there be wine this time?! We do briefly see a glass of wine being served, so we can hopefully bank on at least some kind of drinks program this season, but that doesn’t leave us much to conclude other than that it does not appear that any big-name wine pros are going to be showing up à la season 3’s star roles for chefs Daniel Boulud and Thomas Keller.
So who will step up to serve the Bear’s thirstiest diners in season 4? We’d love to see the honor go to Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as he continues his journey from Italian beef stand manager to maître d’hôtel, if for no other reason than to hear him say, “You can really smell the dirt!!”
Handyman-turned–food runner Neil (Matty Matheson) would provide endless enjoyment as a somm in training, but he’s still learning how to walk in this season’s trailer. That leaves Sweeps (Corey Hendrix), the former minor league baseball player–turned–food runner who we saw absolutely mangle a cork while attempting to use a corkscrew in season 3. From someone who did the same thing their first week on the job at a grand SoHo hotel in the late nineties, we’ll be rooting for you, Sweeps.
Who knows? Maybe this season will even make us laugh! Season 4 of FX’s The Bear premieres June 25 on Hulu. Until then, treat yourself to a meal at one of the more than 3,800 real-life restaurants around the world that just earned one of Wine Spectator's 2025 Restaurant Awards!
